Eastside Homes for Sale in Downtown Charleston, SC
Eastside is one of the neighborhoods on the Charleston Peninsula, the narrow strip of land bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers that forms Downtown Charleston.
Eastside overview
The Historic Charleston Foundation describes the Eastside as bounded on the south by Mary Street, on the west by Meeting Street and on the east by the Cooper River, continuing northward to about Huger Street. The foundation also notes that these boundaries have changed over the years.
The Village of Hampstead
Drawing on research by Charleston County Public Library historian Nic Butler, the foundation traces the area to November 1769, when Henry Laurens began marketing his property to the public as the Village of Hampstead. Laurens named the central east-west street for Christopher Columbus.
The foundation calls Hampstead Mall “now the oldest public green space in Charleston.” The area was officially incorporated into the city in 1850. A large cotton mill was built facing East Bay Street in 1882, and the building later housed a cigar factory from 1912. The home and workshop of ironworker Philip Simmons are on Blake Street.
What to confirm for an Eastside property
Check the listing’s current status and location. Because the area’s boundaries have shifted over time, confirm where a specific address falls. For an older property, review renovation records, flood information, parking and any applicable historic district review before making a decision.
