French Quarter Homes for Sale in Downtown Charleston, SC
The French Quarter lies just north of South of Broad on the Charleston Peninsula, the narrow strip of land bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers that forms Downtown Charleston.
French Quarter overview
The French Quarter, the area around the Old Exchange Building and Dock Street Theatre, blends residential charm with visitor activity. The neighborhood has the same 18th- and 19th-century architecture as South of Broad but draws more foot traffic, more restaurants, more galleries, and more weekend crowds.
Homes here are a mix of owner-occupied single houses and converted storefronts with residential units above street-level shops. Condo conversions are common. The French Quarter also hosts the Dock Street Theatre, a venue whose site hosted the original 1736 theatre; the present venue was created in the 1930s within a nineteenth-century hotel shell, and City Market, institutions that anchor the city’s cultural identity and draw visitors year-round.
Street parking is contested even for residents.
The Dock Street Theatre site
The first Dock Street Theatre opened on this site in 1736. The building visitors see today is different: the Planter’s Hotel occupied the site from 1809, and the present theatre was built within its shell during a 1930s public works project. It reopened in 1937.
